Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a nonionic cellulose ether produced by subjecting natural polymeric cellulose to a series of chemical processes. It appears as an odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic white to off-white powder or granules that are soluble in cold water, forming a clear, viscous solution. HEC exhibits a wide range of functional properties, including thickening, adhesion, dispersion, emulsification, film-forming, suspension, adsorption, surface activity, salt tolerance, moisture retention, and colloid protection. Hydroxyethyl cellulose finds applications in various industries, such as construction materials, coatings, petrochemicals, synthetic resins, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, agriculture, cosmetics, tobacco, inks, and papermaking.
Product Nature
As a nonionic surfactant, hydroxyethyl cellulose not only exhibits thickening, suspending, binding, emulsifying, film-forming, dispersing, water-retention, and protective properties, but also possesses the following characteristics:
1. HEC is soluble in both cold and hot water and does not precipitate under high temperatures or upon boiling, resulting in a broad range of solubility and viscosity characteristics—i.e., it does not form a thermogel.
2. Being nonionic in nature, it is compatible with a wide range of other water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and salts, making it an excellent colloidal thickener for solutions containing high concentrations of electrolytes.
3. It exhibits twice the water-retention capacity of methyl cellulose and demonstrates superior flow-modulating properties.
4. This product exhibits stable viscosity, excellent mold resistance, and enhances the paint’s open-can performance, while also providing superior leveling during application.
